Abstract

The prevalence of the Indonesian population with high blood pressure is 34.11%. The prevalence of high blood pressure in women (36.85%) is higher than  men (31.34%). The prevalence in urban areas is higher (34.43%) compared to rural areas (33.72%). This pattern can be assumed to occur because behavioral risk factors that have the potential to cause hypertension are more commonly found in urban areas than in rural areas. Adherence is often a problem in patients with chronic diseases that require lifestyle modification and long-term treatment. The level of adherence of hypertensive patients to treatment is still below the WHO estimate. Adherence to long-term drug use in patients in developing countries is 50%. Patient adherence to taking medication has an effect on controlled blood pressure. This step is believed to be a form of controlling hypertension by reducing the number of cases, complications, and deaths due to hypertension. So it is necessary to analyze knowledge about hypertension in the elderly, in the hope that having good knowledge can affect medication adherence.

This study uses quantitative methods with analytical descriptive research design with a cross sectional approach. The population in this study amounted to 50 respondents and a sample of 30 people were taken using purposive sampling technique. The data was collected using a questionnaire and the results were analyzed by the Spearman Rank statistical test.

The results showed that knowledge about hypertension in the low category was 46.7% and the high category was 53.3%. The level of adherence to treatment in patients with hypertension at the Sleman Health Center with a low category of 46.7%, moderate adherence 30.0% and high adherence 23.3%

The conclusion of the study is that there is a relationship between the level of knowledge and adherence to treatment in elderly patients with hypertension at the Sleman Health Center with a p value of 0.000.
